Inside the Operating Room | Vancouver Doula and Birth Photographer

After hours and days of labour, it became evident that my clients would be bringing their baby into the world with a caesarean birth. I was blessed with being invited into the operating room, to document their baby’s arrival. And lucky for them, the doctor who brought their baby into the world did it with so much love, you could see him smiling behind his mask during the entire delivery. It was really a magical birth and I was so blessed to be part of it. Here is the moment they got to see their baby, we had to move the cord so they could discover if it was a boy or a girl. Not to mention they did delayed cord clamping!

This birth was magical in many ways. I got to photograph a birth with a local doula and a midwife I had never work with before. I also got to watch this family become new parents after a very intense few days. It was also my first birth with henna on moms belly… it definitely adds some flavour to the labour photos. Welcome to the world little man, you are going to have a fun life with these two. Thank you Jennifer and Dan for sharing your beautiful story.

Today I was honoured to meet this new little person. Check out this baby, just less than an hour old and already so full of character. His personality was present and alive right from the moment he came out. I think I am in love and so are his parents.

This morning I witnessed a beautiful home water birth. These parents brought their first child into their arms, in their living room, just as Vancouver was waking up. Welcome little lady, your dad is an amazing multitasking attentive guy and your mama has incredible focus and determination. Thank you both for bring me into your wonderful family.

My Sweet September 18th Boy | Vancouver Birth Photographer and Doula

This mom and dad were faced with a huge challenge right after their sweet boy was brought into this world. He needed to go down to the nursery for a little assistance with his lungs. I documented the process and have done my best to share with you this little man’s first hours of life.

Then they got to have a second meeting downstairs in the nursery. As soon as mom was touching and talking to him, he opened his eyes and started to move all of his little body parts as if to say all will be well mom and dad. Pure magic.

This family is deep in my thoughts tonight. Deep in my heart I know their sweet strength and the way they support each other will rise above and they will come out of this moment stronger then they ever thought they could be. Welcome to the world my new little friend. I can’t wait for a morning update. xo

This excerpt was written by Jessica Austin, Vancouver doula: I’m just wiping the sleep out of my eyes as I wake up after 36 straight hours of providing doula support to a new family who birthed not one, but TWO beautiful girls early this morning. Vancouver birth photographer, Morag Hastings, was there to document this incredible twin birth on camera, and the photos she sent me to wake up to made me burst right into delicious tears.

After months of carefully selecting a birth team and making sure she understood all of her options in birthing twins, an amazing mother demonstrated both physical and emotional strength over the last several days as she brought her two girls into the world. Allowing the twins’ birth to unfold in a way that honoured the mother’s values and choices took strength and courage from both parents while they journied through their long and powerful birth process. The looks on each of their faces as they touched and held their twins for the first time exuded love, wonder, and what looked almost like disbelief in what they had just accomplished.

This little boy was peacefully brought into the world in his families livingroom while his big sister slept soundly upstairs. (my kids would NEVER sleep though a birth!) He was 9lbs and born face up also called sunny side up. The connection between these two parents is phenomenal, just check out these images from the first hours of life as a family of four. Here is a little peek into the first hours of this little boys life. He was born happily into his mom and dad’s arms right at 9:09 pm on the 9th month of the 9th day! I am guessing nine might be his special number. Welcome to the world little man. I am sure your two big sisters will enjoy having you around, to teach you everything they know.

Doula Home Water Birth | Vancouver Birth Photographer

Last night I had the special opportunity to photograph a local doula’s third birth. This was special for many reasons one being that she was getting to have her home water birth surrounded by her husband, two children, her mother, father, two sisters, one on skype, as well as two wonderful midwives from Pomegranate Community midwives. Another because she is a doula in my community and we both share a love for birth and supporting families in the process and have had a few playdates with our kids at the park. Also third children are special. I have three kids of my own, I am a third child and so is my husband.

The next part of this process was editing down the images, which I am finding incredibly hard since it was such a beautiful, loving, family filled birth. So this particular post has lots of images. What better way to tell the whole story of the night Jasper was born.

This next group of pictures is incredibly special because Jasper’s oldest brother got to cut his youngest brothers cord.
