Morag Hastings Vancouver’s Birth Doula and Birth Photographer
Growing up on the Southern Gulf Islands I was introduced to birth at a very young age. I witnessed many animals give birth in my presence, which taught me to believe in the natural process of life and enjoy the beauty of birth. This is what began my passion for birth, women’s health, and the body’s natural ability to care for its offspring.
In 2001 I became a mother, labouring first at home then giving birth in the hospital. Then, in 2004, my son was born at home with midwives, my husband, and two close friends. My last child, born in 2009, was an induction at 34 weeks and he was born weighing 3lbs 12 oz. Each child has taught me different lessons in life, about birth and about parenthood. I am grateful for every one of them. This is what lead me to become a Vancouver doula offering my services to families living in the Lower Mainland.
I am a birth doula, Hypno-doula trained, and personally experienced in childbirth. In the summer of 2012, I participated in the Birthing from Within Mentor and Doula workshop. In 2013, I completed the 18 hour Breastfeeding course and a Rebozo technique workshop. In 2014 I co-created and currently teach the first and only home birth specific childbirth classes in Vancouver, BC. I believe in always expanding and learning as much as I can about birth so I can bring all kinds of methods and theories when assisting my clients with their births.
As a doula, my role is to provide physical and emotional support and assist in gathering information for my clients during labor and birth. I offer help and advice with comfort measures such as breathing, relaxation, massage, movement, and positioning. I have a TENS machine for my clients to use during their labour and a birth pool for rent if you would like to use one in your home.
I will provide continuous emotional reassurance and comfort from the beginning of labour until your baby is born and the hours directly after. I specialize in non-medical skills and do not perform clinical tasks, such as fetal heart rate monitoring. Most importantly, I do not make decisions for you; I do not project my own values and goals onto you and your partner, instead, I help you use your own voice. I will always make sure that your partner is your main support, I am there as a secondary support for your whole birth team. I like to think of myself as a birth guide. Like you would have if you were on an adventure in a wild jungle, that you had never been to before.
I also offer my services as a birth photographer. In 2000 I graduated from Langara College Professional Photography Program. In 2012 I co-created the Canadian Birth Photographers Directory to help people from all over Canada find birth photographers. I continue to mentor many photographers all around the world. My images have been featured in many top magazines and websites including Elle, Cosmopolitan, Self, Redbook, The Independent, BBC, huffingpost.com, Today’s Parent, TED Talks and the Midwives Association of BC’s 2014 New Vision for Midwifery and Maternity Care public campaign. My image won the Best in Labour category in the 2016 International Birth Photography Contest and was voted one of Vancouver’s top Family Photographers on Vancouvermom.ca.
