Images of Babies Being Born | Vancouver Birth Photographer

As a birth doula and photographer, in Vancouver B.C., I have documented and supported over a hundred families giving birth. I have started to think that images of  babies crowning is normal imagery, that these images should not be shocking to the average person. Then I get a comment by someone who follows my facebook page and I remember, not everyone is used to seeing babies come out of vaginas on a regular basis.

Many birth photographers shy away from showing crowning images because they think their clients wouldn’t want to see ‘that.’ I have had doctors moments before birth say “I don’t think they want to see that.”   Well let me tell you when I was pregnant I DID want to see “that.” I was fascinated with the process and needed and wanted to see how my body released my baby into the world. So if you find yourself here wondering what it might look like when you push your baby into the world feel free to stay a bit, soak it in, enjoy. If you ever feel weird about wanting to see these moments or “that moment” be proud of yourself that you are interested in what is happening to your body. It should be something that is celebrated. Not that you have to share the images at Christmas time on your large screen TV, with the inlaws, if you do I promise I won’t judge, I might even ask if I can join your rad family for the next holiday celebration.

The moment you can see the baby starting to enter the world its earth shattering, amazing. Lucky for you I have some very generous clients who are willing to share what birthing a baby can look like. Hopefully seeing these images will normalize the process for you. (You can click to make these bigger.)

Here mom is on her back at the hospital. The doctor is giving perineal support with a hot cloth. You can see the baby emerging with one contraction. Then the baby rotates between contractions and with the next contraction the baby’s shoulders, head and body is born. This is all with two contractions. The mom had many more pushing contractions before this to get the baby to the crowning moment. This point is also known as burning ring of fire. Vaginal Birth Hospital

You can see the mom touching the top of her baby’s head in the first image. It can be quite grounding to feel your baby as it emerges into the world.

Home Birth

Some babies are already letting us know they are ready for earth-side before they are fully born.
